Ozone distribution changes with the seasons. It is also affected by industrial chemicals (mainly CFCs) which create an 'ozone hole' over Antarctica in the southern spring. Ozone depletion is the second largest human impact on the climate, after the increase in greenhouse gases. Most ozone is found in the stratosphere, 15 to 25 km above the Earth's surface. As well as protecting life on Earth from the Sun's ultraviolet radiation, ozone is also a powerful greenhouse gas. Ozone depletion is cooling the stratosphere. But lower down, increasing levels of ozone, often found alongside atmospheric aerosol particles in industrial and agricultural smog, are warming the troposphere.
