Frozen seeds at the Millennium Seed Bank. Researcher handling seeds in cryogenic storage. Most of the samples are stored at minus 20 degrees Celsius, but some (as here) are preserved using liquid nitrogen (minus 196 degrees Celsius). These seeds are being stored at the Millennium Seed Bank in the Wellcome Trust Millennium Building at Wakehurst Place, West Sussex, UK. Co-ordinated by the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership is an international effort aimed at safeguarding tens of thousands of plant species from around the world. The building offers space to store millions of seed samples, as well as advanced seed research and processing facilities. Opened in 2000, as of 2015 it has nearly 2 billion seeds stored, representing around 13 percent of the world's wild plant species.
