Hepatitis B infection in artificial liver research. Fluorescent microscopy images of healthy (uninfected) liver cells (top) and infected liver cells (bottom) being studied during organ-on-a-chip artificial liver research. The infection is the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The fluorescent markers are DAPI (a blue DAPI stain) and HBcAg (a hepatitis B antigen). This research involves the use of an artificial liver to simulate the physiology of a human liver, and to test the response to infection and methods of treatment. This research uses microfluidic liver culture platforms. It is being carried out by a group led by Dr Marcus Dorner at Imperial College London, with a focus on research into hepatitis B infections. The results of the research were published in 2018.
