Green heron (Butorides virescens) searching for prey in Ohio pond. While these small herons mainly eat fish and frogs, they will eat any invertebrate they can find and capture, including worms and insects. This one is using its sharp beak to peck beneath the bark of an old log. Not much larger than a crow it has an exceptionally long neck which is effective for hunting. Green herons are found throughout North and Central America. | |
