Soap film in a circular aperture, showing the variation in colours in different parts of the film. The colours depend on the thickness of the film, as they are formed by the interference of light rays reflecting from the front and back of the film. Different thicknesses of film cause interference in different wavelengths of light, leading to different colours being enhanced and diminished across the film. The thickness of the film is influenced mainly by gravity, getting thicker towards the bottom, hence the bands of colour appear to cross the film horizontally, revealing the regions of similar thickness across the film. Over time, surface tension and convection have more of an effect, leading to the loss of banding and more complicated patterns | |
