Brownian motion of particles in an algal strand, light microscopy footage. Algae are typically microscopic aquatic plants whose cells contain chloroplasts where photosynthesis takes place. Brownian motion describes the small seemingly random movements of particles suspended in a fluid. It is named after the Scottish botanist Robert Brown, who first observed the phenomenon. It was later recognised that the movements were caused by the particles colliding with molecules of the fluid.
