3D animation featuring Valles Marineris (Mariner Valley), the so-called Grand Canyon of Mars, near the center of the frame. According to NASA Valles Marineris is the largest canyon in the solar system with a length of 3, 000 kilometres and a depth of 8 kilometres. By comparison Earth s Grand Canyon is 800 kilometres in length and 1.8 kilometres in depth. Mars rotates in a counter-clockwise, west to east, direction, the same direction as most planets in our solar system. Mars completes a rotation in nearly the same amount of time as does Earth. Mars gets its red color from the iron oxide on its surface. | |
