Neil Armstrong stepping onto the Moon. Footage from the pilot window of the Apollo 11 lunar module (LM-5 Eagle) of US astronaut Neil Armstrong (commander of the Apollo 11 mission) making his historic descent to the surface of the Moon on 21 July 1969. Armstrong was the first human to step foot on the surface of the Moon. During the descent of the lander's ladder he triggered the operation of another camera (the one that obtained the more famous footage), seen here as the light switches on at 0:20. He also steps down onto the lander's footpad, and tests the ground before making his famous first step onto the surface. The footage then jumps forward to show Armstrong unfurling his tether and lanyard as he walks backwards onto the lunar surface. During this footage, the other member of the crew, Buzz Aldrin, remained inside the lander. At the point Armstrong first stepped onto the Moon's surface, he declared his famous line: 'That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.' | |
