Mission Control watch Armstrong and Aldrin on the Moon. Apollo 11 flight controllers watching US astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin soon after they first arrived on the Moon. Armstrong is reading from the plaque bolted to the leg of the descent stage of the Lunar Module. The plaque displayed two drawings of Earth's western and eastern hemispheres, an inscription, and the signatures of the astronauts (including Mike Collins orbiting overhead) and President Richard Nixon. The inscription stated: 'Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon, July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.' Armstrong had unveiled this plaque earlier while descending the lunar module's ladder. The images shown here were broadcast live on television screens around the world.
