Launch of the Ranger I mission on 23rd August 1961, the first in NASA's Ranger program to photograph the surface of the Moon. Ranger I was a failure. Although it successfully reached its orbital altitude, but an overheated circuit caused an engine failure during its transfer to a higher orbit. This led to an inability to control the probe, and it burned up on re-entry to Earth after four days and 111 orbits. It was not until Ranger VII that close-up photos of the Moon were returned. | |
