Flower on the stem of a coca plant (Erythroxylum coca), the source of the drug cocaine. The coca plant is native to the forested slopes of the Andes. Its leaves have been used for centuries by indiginous people, either chewed or made into tea, for its stimulant and appetite-suppressing effects. The cocaine itself can be extracted chemically to obtain the pure illegal drug. Filmed in the Ecuadorian Amazon. | |
