Radiation therapy for prostate cancer. Footage of a demonstration of how external beam radiation (a form of radiotherapy) is used to deliver a precise dose of radiation to treat prostate cancer. The subject is positioned on the treatment table and held in place with an immobilization device. The machine uses lasers and rotates around the subject to deliver the radiation to the correct areas. The radiation will be focused on the tumour site, and used to disrupt and ultimately kill the cancer cells. This machine is a linear accelerator (LINAC) type, using high-energy X-rays to kill the cancer cells. The prostate is a male gland at the base of bladder. Footage obtained in September 2010.
