Angiography video of blood flowing through the aorta of a healthy 57 year old patient. The aorta is the main artery leaving the heart. At the top of the aortic arch are three branches; the brachiocephalic artery, the left common carotid artery and the left subclavian artery, which carry blood to the head and arms. The aorta itself completes a U-turn at the aortic arch, and the descending aorta supplies blood to the rest of the body. This view was obtained using the Seldinger technique, a medical procedure to obtain safe access to blood vessels and other hollow organs. This involves using a pigtail catheter. Angiography is an imaging technique in which a radio-opaque contrast medium is injected into blood vessels to allow them to be seen on an X-ray. | |
