Roos Carr Warriors, wooden carving from Withensea, East Yorkshire. c.1100 - 500 BC. These 'spiritual warriors' made from Yew with quartzite eyes and a removeable phallus' were deposited in a waterway, perhaps as an offering to protect an important travel and trade route. Mounted together on board a small boat, these figures might also depict a dangerous waterbourne raiding party. | |
