Thyroid hormones, molecular structures. Thyroid hormones regulate metabolism. Thyroxine (T4) is made from tyrosine in the thyroid gland. Once in the blood, an enzyme converts T4 to liothyronine (T3) and reverse T3 (rT3). All three are used to treat thyroid disorders. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (grey), hydrogen (white), oxygen (red), nitrogen (blue) and iodine (purple). | |
