Road construction. Laying of the top 'wearing' course of a road. A layer of bituminous asphalt is laid by the spreader at centre, seen here receiving fresh supplies of asphalt from a lorry (left). The spreader keeps the asphalt hot with a gas flame. A hopper (right) then spreads tar- coated aggregate on the surface. This is compacted using a heavy roller to complete the surface.
