Chest and neck from the side,coloured computed tomography (CT) scan. The front of the body is at left. The spine runs from top centre to lower right. It is made up of block-like bones called vertebrae. The vertebrae surround and protect the spinal cord (orange). The diagonal protuberences at the rear of the vertebrae are seen to the right of the spinal cord. To the left of the spine is the trachea (windpipe,red),which is partly seen at upper centre. The red oval at lower centre is a bronchus (airway) in a lung. The front of the ribcage is seen down left (orange circles). CT scanning uses X-rays to build up a slice image of the body
