Professor Jack Steinberger,German-American physicist, born in Bad Kissingen in Germany on 25 May 1921. Steinberger shared the 1988 Nobel Prize in physics with Leon Lederman and Melvin Schwarz for an experiment at Brookhaven in 1962 on the behaviour of neutrinos, showing that two types of neutrino exist and that they may be paired with electrons and muons to form leptons, the basis of the modern theory of elementary particles. Steinberger studied physics at the University of Chicago under professors such as Fermi and Teller. He became a professor himself in 1954,and joined CERN in 1968. He is currently the spokesman for the ALEPH experiment on the LEP Collider Ring | |
