Testing a weld with ultrasound. View of a gear wheel from a car, being tested in an ultrasound water bath. This is to check the quality of a weld in the gear wheel. A signal from an ultrasound transducer (bottom) is sent into the wheel, and is reflected by the weld. The stronger the reflection, the greater any fault and thus the weaker the weld. The piece is immersed in a water bath to ensure good transmission and reception of the ultrasound signal. This technology may replace some existing, more expensive methods such as radiography in automotive quality control | |
