European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT),artwork. This architectural rendering shows the telescope open at night and taking observations. This telescope is being constructed from 2012 at the Cerro Armazones site in the Chilean desert. The E-ELT will be used to study extrasolar planets,super-massive black holes and dark matter. With a primary mirror measuring 39 metres across it will collect 25 times more light than the telescopes used by the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The E-ELT project is scheduled to be completed and operational by 2022. This preliminary rendering of the telecsope was published in 2011 | |
