Radio-emitting quasar galaxy 3C175,radio image. A quasar (quasi-stellar radio source) is a distant and very energetic galaxy that has an active galactic nucleus. Here, the galaxy is the small white dot at centre, but it is so powerful that it acts as a particle cannon, spurting jets of protons and electrons. One jet is the orange line running towards lower right, which extends beyond a million light years and ends as a explosive cloud. These jets are believed to be fuelled by a supermassive black hole at the galaxy's core. Image obtained using radio data is from the Very Large Array (VLA) telescope | |
