Electron-quark interaction in the H1 detector at DESY,the German particle physics lab in Hamburg. The computer display shows the detector in blue, green & orange, sliced along its length at top and seen end-on at bottom. In the top image,an electron enters from left and a proton from right, both unseen, accelerated in DESY's HERA collider. The electron collides with a quark in the nucleus of the proton. The quark, deflected to upper left, creates a jet of other particles (red tracks & blocks). The electron, meanwhile, turns into an electron-neutrino,which leaves the detector unseen. The end-on view of the same event also shows just the jet created by the quark | |
